Before the spring was protected, eight-year-old Sharnice said, “When it rains, we lack water for drinking because it's usually too dirty. I also fear stepping in water to fetch water because of dangerous animals that bite [me] very painfully." 

Community members reported suffering from frequent cases of diarrhea, stomachache, headache, liver flukes (parasites that cause liver and bile duct disease), and typhoid from collecting and consuming the unprotected water. They also wasted a lot of time queueing for water.  There was overcrowding and conflicts, which usually led to fights.
